Stayton, OR

Situated about 12 miles southeast of Salem, Stayton is a budding city that lies in Marion County, Oregon. A regional light manufacturing and agricultural center, the city sits east of Aumsville and south of Sublimity, along the North Santiam River. Stayton has an estimated population of 7,700 residents.

The city was founded and purchased by Drury Smith Stayton in 1866. After receiving a post office, he wanted to name the city Florence – after the name of his daughter Florence Stayton – but this was not possible because another Oregon city was already named Florence. He then chose Stayton as the name of the city, naming a street in honor of his daughter.

Incorporated in 1891, Stayton is home to various points of interests, including the Stayton-Jordan Bridge, Kingston Prairie Reserve and Silver Falls State Park – a major tourist destination in the region and the largest state park in Oregon. Santiam Hospital is the lone hospital serving the city.

Education is given considerable importance here, evident from the vast number of schools serving the residents of Stayton. Some of the most prominent schools include Stayton High School, North Santiam School District, St. Mary Elementary School and Regis High School.
